Spring at the Rescue

Well it’s almost summer really…..sorry about the delay in postings, but some truly remarkable things have happened at the Rescue in the past few months. First let me catch everyone up with Gidget. Thank you to everyone who has spent some time with Gidget. She looks wonderful! Her coat is well-groomed and shiny. She’s even letting some volunteers pick her tiny little hooves.

Although Gidget is a permanent resident due to her unique physique, other horses at the rescue are finding new homes and new adoptive parents. Some of our favorites have left the rescue to new beginnings and adventures. I am so thankful for Cheryl and the Rescue. My heart has been stolen by a very special horse. Dallas is everything I never knew I was missing in life. He had been adopted before and unfortunately, circumstances and life changes forced these families to return him to the rescue in hopes that he would find the right family….and he has…finally. The day we met is one that will forever stay in my heart. Dallas was standing in the top pasture looking down at me…my heart melted.

It’s finally official! Dallas has been ADOPTED!

We moved Dallas to a quiet pasture down the road from the rescue…. a place where he can heal and just be a horse. It’s the most amazing feeling to see him run with a new herd of horses! It’s been about 24 hrs since the move and I can’t stay away. As a very nervous mother, every time another horse nipped or kicked at him…I stopped breathing. Will he fit in? find water? find shelter? What if he gets cut or caught on the fence? Will someone see him if he gets sick? I wanted to camp out at the barn, but my wonderful husband convinced me to come home and finally leave Dallas to settle in with the other horses.

My fears were unfounded…..this morning he is following the herd, learning the fence lines. He is figuring out where to find shelter from the rain, the best trees to stand under when the sun is too hot, and which watering hole is the tastiest. He is climbing hills and walking through streams. He has two new friends in the pasture and he calls to them whenever he gets too far from the group. In such a short time…Dallas has reverted back to a young colt and is definitely not showing his age. That beautiful pasture has become his fountain of youth. It is such a privilege and a blessing to be able to do this for him.

Happy Holidays from Gidget

Hi all-
Gidget had a wonderful holiday season keeping everyone in line at the barn. The wet muddy days at the rescue have made for some treacherous conditions in the pastures, but Gidget does her best to get around, and has been seen recently visiting Smokey and friends at their hay bale. The larger horses at the rescue are sometimes sloppy eaters and Gidget uses this to her advantage….sneaking in underneath the feed buckets to pick-up the dropped goodies. Unfortunately, she doesn’t wait until they have finished eating and a lot of grain ends up on her back! Her sneaky feeding habits and the muddy winter have resulted in a very filthy pony. Our little queen Gidget would prefer to be kept spotless and elegant. Please come out to the rescue and brush out her thick winter coat and tail! She loves it and is so appreciative that she will follow you around the rest of the afternoon!

The Little Queen

Hello everyone and welcome to Gidget’s blog page. This is my first blog for Gidget so let me introduce you to her…..

Gidget is dwarf miniature horse and due to this genetic condition, she has shortened extremities (legs, ears, neck…). This little hiccup in her development has not stopped her from proclaiming herself “Queen” of the rescue. From her thick luxurious gray coat to her long mane and tail, she knows she looks good! Her unique stature enables her to go pretty much everywhere she wants to go. She’s even small enough to squeeze underneath the pasture railing and at any given time can be seen visiting (read this as eating) with the boys. Recently, she’s been visiting with Jester, QT, and Doodlebug. Gidget’s favorite pastimes include eating, grazing, and looking for food.
